The Calm Before The Storm

Before heading to any battlefield, one must be well prepared. Know your enemy well, but never neglect knowing what you are capable of. This is the principles of "Art of War." There, now that I have gained your attention, we can talk less about intimidating things and focus more on the cute aspect of life. What I wrote in the beginning may have little relevance, but you will see the comparison clearly with each words.

It is now that time. Behold, I present to you:
The POWER of LOVE! Oh wait, are the loves meant to be the human heart (look to your left at the hand with a picture of the human heart)?

*The sounds of a tape being rewind* I apologize, what this picture really is is just a mock of our sessions. The volunteers are pretending to be little kids the age of 3-7. Well, to them, the heart is the shape of a love, but we are here to tell them that it is not!

How big is the heart? Well, it's the size of your fist! Where is it located? The upper left side of your chest! (Our cheeky volunteers were trying to confuse the poor coordinator. They were supposed to raise their left hands but some, acting like 5 year olds, lifted their right hands)

There it is, the only person with a heart
Oh no, these kids know not where to place the heart!

I wonder what those 2 purple things are? Looks like lungs to me.

Oh how frustrating, how can the lungs be at those spots!!

Now she's had it. Giving a much needed lecture to these naughty kids. Know your anatomy!

What is this! Tell me! No playing now, or else..!!!

Match the correct location! We have to match each organs to it's correct anatomical location. But with Teddy, it will be a little difficult!

What's next? Are you feeling slightly famished? Let's see, what do we have here. It's a food plate!
Red is for Fruits; Orange is for Grains; Blue is for Dairy products; Purple is for protein; Green is for greens! Sing the food plate song!

Looks like we have a problem assigning the category of the food. Hmm, these little kids!

Little children can be a little curious at times, and this is a good thing. However, sometimes, their curiosity may get the better of them and lead to dangerous situations.
See here, mommy is telling Teddy not to touch the iron as it is HOT!

But when mommy is gone, Teddy approaches the iron!

Oh no!! Naughty Teddy is going to play with the hot iron. What is she thinking?!

Teddy touches the iron and hurts herself! Owwwiiieee..

What should Teddy do now? Right! She calls mommy for help!

Hot things are hazardous, but so are sharp things. Teddy is again feeling mischievous, not learning her lesson!
\
Mommy warning Teddy not to play with the scissors. But look at that mischievous face, it spells danger!

Oh no, mommy got a call and have to go out now. What will Teddy do?

Teddy obviously doesn't listen to people. How defiant of her. Look at her playing with the scissors! She hurts herself again!

This time mommy doesn't pick up her phone. Who should Teddy call? Stay tuned!

Children can also be amazed at things they don't understand. For example, how can a light bulb connected to a socket shine? It's like magic!
Teddy is curious! This thing make light bulbs shine! How exciting!

I wonder what happens if I poke this with a metal object? Poke poke poke....

Oh no! Teddy became unconscious. Seems like Teddy was electrocuted! Remember who Teddy should contact next if she can't contact her parents. Luckily, Teddy's sister called 999 for help! Resuscitate Teddy!

And so ends the mock session. The "kids" were all non-complaint and were a real headache. But I guess everyone had fun, which was the most important part. Now for the real test, can Teddy Bear Hospital do it? We will find out, TOMORROW! :)

Just Another Day at Work

Hi hi ho ho!! Off to work we go... Hi hi ho ho!!

There is a saying that behind every successful man, there is a woman. Well, in our case, behind any successful organization, there are dedicated people!

What happens when a teddy bear falls and breaks his arm? Well, first of all, we need a sling so that the injured arm can be supported and rested. For there to be a sling, we will need bandages! Seen here is one of our volunteers avidly measuring and cutting cloth for our much needed bandages. Such enthusiasm!
Teddy would also like to take the opportunity to ask people out there if there are outdated/unwanted first aid kits or bandages that can be donated to our cause. Teddy will appreciate any help given!

Anatomy anatomy, we need to know the parts of our body and their functions. How are we able to view our organs without using X- rays? Simple, we draw them out to illustrate them! Thanks to our talented artist here, children will be able to have a general understanding of how our organs look like and where they are located in the body.
The concentration in her eyes. I doubt if she will notice if a cannon was fired!

Teddy with her organs. She must be proud to know her anatomy well!

So what's left? We almost have everything ready. Teddy is excited and can't wait for the new adventure, we have all the equipment at the go. The volunteers are well prepared. What else do we need for a hospital? Oh wait, how can this be less obvious? How can we miss this? All hospitals needs an ambulance of course! One of our professors once said, jokingly so, "The 3 things that a hospitals needs are 1) Ambulance 2) Driver for the ambulance 3) Making sure that the driver is available." So how do we go about solving this predicament we have? Well, the smartest choice is to just build one ourselves!

Each person has his/her own job! Cut, stick, paste! We start from scratch!

Medic! This ambulance needs help building up!

This ambulance needs a nose! Or is it where the engine is? Hmmm..

Voila! The almost complete product! Just needs a few more touch up and we have our very own Teddy Bear Hospital ambulance! Let the siren begin!

With this, we can say that Teddy Bear Hospital is near completion. Yes, we are still a mobile hospital and have little patients for now. But there is a Chinese saying, a journey of a thousand miles begins with the first step. Well, we are taking the first step now, and we will see where this path leads us to. All I can say is, indeed, we are going down the path not taken.

Gentle Reminder!!

To all Teddy lovers out there, Teddy is trying to advocate basic safety measure while in the car. Fasten your seat belts boys and girls!

On another note, Teddy Bear Hospital will be going to its very first adventure on the 26th of August! We will be visiting our very first kindergarten and will be expecting around 20 young and promising children to greet us!

What excitement awaits us? Tune in so you can find out! :)

A little sneak peak into what we will be doing. We have given a little fixer upper to these injured teddies.. And now that they are all fixed, see how cute teddies the are!

Fund Raising Event Resumed!

We continued our fund raising the next day as we were unable to reach out to everyone on the first day. It was once again an invaluable experience as we were shown what true generosity and kindness were. Every one was just overwhelmingly supportive and we experienced what humans are willing to do for a good cause.
Associate Prof. David took some time off his busy schedule to listen to our project. Thank you for the contribution!

A picture with Dr Sarah who just joined PUGSOM this year. Thank you Dr Sarah and hope you enjoy your time in Malaysia.

Teddy with the supportive Bioinformatics team! Sincere thanks to the team for their kind contribution.

Ms. Lina loves Teddy much! We'll always remember what you did for us. From the bottom of our heart, thank you!

Professors from RCSI giving us insightful advice. Thank you.

Mr. Amuthaganesh with his peace sign. Peace with you and thank you!

The kindness that Ms. Maimunah showed us moved us deeply. Thank you.

There are many other people who contributed to TBH but were camera shy. We just want each and every one of you to know that we do not forget and we appreciate every help you all have provided us. All of you are what made TBH possible, and for that, we won't disappoint you. We will do our very best to spread awareness among the children and to learn and be better physician from the experience we gain.

I know I have been very repetitive, but thank you all from the bottom of our hearts. Till next time!
